If you smoke, drink alcohol and take chronic medication, don’t exercise regularly, eat a healthy diet or get enough sleep, you may not be as healthy as you think.

If you always feel tired, stressed or anxious, or suffer from heartburn, insomnia or constant pain, homocysteine tests are a quick and easy way to evaluate your health.  These blood tests are fast, accurate and inexpensive and available at many health centres and pharmacy clinics.

Interpreting your H-score reading

Below 6:     Super-healthy (top 10%of the population
6 – 8:         Good but not great (35% of population)
9 – 12:       Average poor health, significant risk of premature death from preventable diseases            (20% of population)
13 – 15:     Worse than average, real risk of death from preventable diseases (20%)
16 – 20:     High risk.  More than 50% chance of heart attack, stroke, cancer or Alzheimer’s in 10 – 30 years (10%)
20+:         Significant, immediate risk (5%)

    Hi Johan

You can get them done at most medical laboratories. In Centurion there are several in the Unitas Hospital as far as we know.

The test costs around R170 and the results are ready a few hours after you have given blood.

    Please keep us posted.
